Motorsport history of Mikko Eskelinen and GTM Motorsport
Even our team is quite new our members have over 20 years of experience from motorsport. All members are highly active in all sort of motorsport from Karting to Racing and Motocross.
Our number one driver, double Finnish Race Champion Mikko Eskelinen started his motorsport career at 1986. During the seasons 1986-1990 he drove approximately 200 motocross events with good success. After season 1990 he retired for 15 years due study and busy company works.
In season 2006 K1 Katsastajat sponsored K1 Racing Endurance team. In sponsoring agreement there was reserved a driving position for few rounds for personel of K1 Katsastajat. Mikko took the change and was seen in first-ever racing event at May 2006. Eskelinen drove qualifying and start and immediately was again sold to motorsport. This is how his own GTM Motorsport got started.
In summer 2006 Eskelinen invested BMW 325iM Endurance race car for season 2007. In winter 2007 he experienced few rally rounds with his good friend Juha Pylvänäinen and in May the engines for GTM Motorsport was started.
Debut season 2007 in Endurance gave lots of success for Eskelinen and his GTM Motorsport team. In August Mikko had his debut on Finnish Race Championship behind the steering wheel of Honda Civic Type-R and he felt love for the series. At October Mikko and his good friend Eero Räikkönen had a visit to swedish FLASH Motorsport workshop for having an introduction to Super Touring BMW 320si race car. Decision for purchasing the car was immediately made.
In November the BMW 320si race car entered Finnish soil and practicing for high speed race car got started. At the same time GTM motorsport Endurace team made full service for their car. Also team layout was put together as cars looked the same in their outer apperiance.
Eskelinen started season 2008 from Arctic Lapland Rally with Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI rally car. However the rally came to and in final corner of second stage due off.
Three weeks later Eskelinen had a new run in his home event, FRC Peurunka rally. In pre-rally tests his rally car engine was blown and Eskelinen rent a rally car from the company of four times World Rally Champion Tommi Mäkinen Racing. After seven special stages Eskelinen found himself at seventh position in A-juniors.
Golden season 2008
First complete racing season for Eskelinen started from legendary circuit of Ahvenisto and end in Austrian Salzburgring. The season was a jackpot for Eskelinen as he took six victories and three podium positions from 12 Finnish Race Championship events. These results gave him first title of Finnish Race Champion.
In October at his first-ever International Race event at Austrian Salzburgring was about do history in FIA European Championship series event. In first start Eskelinen was seventh and due reversed starting order he had a front-row position for second race. In start Eskelinen passed his fellow competitor and took the lead. However in first corner he went a bit wide, hit plastic poles and had a spin. Eventually he was eight fastest on second start.
Season 2008 was more than good for GTM Motorsport. In final gala Eskelinen was celebrated as Champion of Finnish and Estonian Race series.
Golder season 2009
In season 2009 Mikko Eskelinen and GTM Motorsport continued from the point where they left in season 2008. BMW 320si race car found new home and GT3 Lamborghini Gallardo travelled from England to Finland. Season 2009 was a complete renew from successfull season 2008 and in September Eskelinen was crowned double Finnish Racing Champion. After fullfilling goals Eskelinen made a bold decision to continue his race career in Europe. Therefore in final quarter of 2009 he tested few GT3 race cars and won Le Mans Winter round opening series event in circuit of Paul Richard. Furthermore GTM Motorsport got a new member as Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX FIN-R tuned rally car entered the team. Mikko drives Suomi Cup rally series events with it.
